Alexandra Road 

The Alexandra Road development in Kingston upon Thames is a project that involved the demolition of an existing single-storey building and the erection of a two-storey building that accommodates four apartment units. This contemporary Edwardian style apartment building hosts two 2-bedroom flats on the ground and lower ground floor and two 3 - bedroom maisonettes on the upper floors. Each benefits from having individual amenities, such as the private gardens, roof terrace areas and allocated parking.

 

Planning conditions were initially refused, the client then looked to us to resolve the outstanding design issues and resubmit a new planning application to satisfy the concerns raised by the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Once sufficient information and supporting evidence had been provided, we gained approval and then looked to progress the structural and technical design stages of work. It gives us great pride that we are able to assist clients in moving forward with proposal and together work towards completion.

 

This site is located within a conservation area, thus special consideration had to be given the greater context of the proposal the architectural style required ornate decorative details and specifications. Some examples of the approved details were the reclaimed Kingston weathered gault brick with a creamy yellow blend, dark grey clay & antique slate tiles, Rehau heritage sash windows, Bath stone bay window cills, headers, cornices, capitals with classical pilasters and moulded crest aluminium gutters. An essential requirement for the approval was details for windows, including depths of reveals, any aprons, sills, mouldings, heads, jambs, transoms, mullions. As a result, it is important that the construction is carried out in strict accordance with the approved drawings.

The site falls within Kingston Hill Conservation Area, as such, it was of the utmost importance that the details of the proposed building preserve or enhance the special character of the wider context.
