Staines Town Hall

The Old Town Hall in Staines is a Grade II listed Renaissance-style building, constructed in 1880 and originally serving as a district council office until 1974. Following the council's relocation, the building was repurposed several times — as an arts center, bar, pub, restaurant and now the Staines Town Hall has been converted into residential units. We were commissioned to assist in the architectural and structural designs for these conversion works and worked in close collaboration with USL Architects.

Our primary objective was to preserve this architectural landmark retain the building's beautiful and ornate interior details, which mirror its striking exterior, so residents could fully appreciate its historic character. To achieve this, we designed apartments with double-height spaces, incorporating a reception area with a mezzanine level for the bedrooms. This layout ensures that almost every part of the flat benefits from views of the intricate ceilings and the expansive, full-height windows.

Converting the Old Town Hall from commercial to residential use required demonstrating that the existing commercial use was no longer viable. We achieved this through marketing evidence provided by estate agents, showing a lack of interest in the property in its current state.​ By securing agreement on the core principles of our proposal during this pre-application stage, we proceeded confidently with the full planning application. This strategic approach not only increased the likelihood of approval but also saved the client valuable time and money, ensuring a faster project completion and delivering market-ready residential units.
